Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about exotic pet care.

How often should my exotic pet have a checkup?
We recommend annual wellness exams for most exotic pets. However, some species may benefit from more frequent visits, especially as they age. Reptiles and birds are masters at hiding illness, so regular checkups help catch problems early.
Do you see all types of exotic pets?
Dr. Dan has experience with a wide variety of exotic species. If you have an unusual pet, give us a call! We'll let you know if we can help or refer you to a specialist if needed.
How should I transport my exotic pet to the clinic?
Use an appropriate carrier for your pet's species. Reptiles should be kept warm during transport. Birds should be in a covered cage to reduce stress. Small mammals do well in secure carriers with familiar bedding. Call us for specific advice for your pet.
Do exotic pets need vaccinations?
Some exotic pets do require vaccinations. Ferrets need rabies and distemper vaccines. Rabbits may need the RHDV2 vaccine depending on risk factors. We'll discuss appropriate preventive care during your pet's exam.
Can you spay or neuter my rabbit/ferret?
Yes! We perform spay and neuter surgeries on rabbits, ferrets, and other small mammals. Spaying female rabbits is especially important as it prevents uterine cancer, which affects up to 80% of unspayed female rabbits.
