We believe in treating every patient as if they were our own pet, and giving them the same loving attention and care. We are a group of highly trained, experienced animal lovers who are devoted to giving our patients the best care possible.
Our team is here because we truly care about you and your animals. Thank you for your patience, your understanding, and your kindness as we continue to provide the best possible veterinary care.
Adams County Veterinary Services was founded in February 2021 with a simple purpose: to serve the families and animals of West Union and the surrounding communities with compassionate, high-quality veterinary care that remains accessible and affordable.
For years before opening the clinic, Dr. Dan was already coming to Adams County. Beginning in 2009, he hosted Pet Health Days at Holy Trinity Church, offering low-cost vaccines and basic services to families in need. Those gatherings were more than clinics — they were conversations, connections, and a reminder that quality veterinary care should be available close to home.
After selling his previous multi-location practice in 2019, Dr. Dan felt called to create something lasting in this community. He purchased and renovated the facility on South Manchester Street, building a full-service hospital designed to meet both routine and complex medical needs.
Today, Adams County Veterinary Services provides:
While we are equipped with modern diagnostic tools and advanced surgical capabilities, our greatest strength is our people. Our team shares a deep commitment to treating every client with respect and every pet with compassion.
We believe veterinary care is not just about medicine — it is about trust, relationships, and serving our neighbors well.
We are proud to call West Union home and look forward to caring for your pets for generations to come.

Meet Dr. Dan
Since graduating from The Ohio State Veterinary School in 1989, Dr. Dan Meakin has been performing surgeries on everything from lizards to llamas. After completing his internship in small animal medicine and surgery in 1990, he was chief surgeon and medical director for the 3 locations of All Creatures Animal Hospitals in Cincinnati for 25 years.
Dr. Dan is a general practitioner offering general practitioner prices for all kinds of specialty services. He is best known for his experience with knee and hip surgeries and other orthopedic conditions in small animals.
His years of work with the Ohio Doberman rescue, Bulldog rescues, Great Dane rescues, and chihuahua groups have given him the experience to perform airway surgeries, handle difficult orthopedic cases, and gastrointestinal procedures such as foreign body and GDV or bloat.
Dr. Daniel Meakin's journey into veterinary medicine began long before veterinary school. Growing up on Cincinnati's east side, he was known as the neighborhood "zookeeper," caring for reptiles, small mammals, dogs, cats, and any creature that needed attention. His passion led him to the Junior Zoologist program at the Cincinnati Zoo while still in middle school — an experience that confirmed he was meant to work with animals.
After graduating from St. Xavier High School, Dr. Dan earned his biology degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University in 1989. He completed advanced training through a small animal internship in California before returning home to serve the community that shaped him.
In 1993, he opened All Creatures Animal Hospital in Amelia, building it over nearly three decades into a trusted, multi-location practice. But throughout those years, Adams County always held a special place in his heart.
Beginning in 2009, Dr. Dan started hosting "Pet Health Days" in West Union — often held at Holy Trinity Church — to provide affordable vaccines and basic veterinary care to families who might not otherwise have access. Those clinics became a meaningful connection to the community and ultimately helped inspire his next chapter.
In 2021, he founded Adams County Veterinary Services to create a permanent home for compassionate, accessible veterinary care in West Union.
Dr. Dan has special interests in orthopedics, exotic animal medicine, ophthalmology, and oncology, and he is especially known for helping pets with complex surgical needs. But what matters most to him is building lasting relationships with families and caring for pets as if they were his own.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Dan enjoys herpetology, writing and playing music, hiking, kayaking, and spending time with his family. He is especially proud that three of his daughters have followed in his footsteps and become veterinarians.
In 2016, he recorded an original CD titled Pass It On, featuring songs inspired by his pets, his children, and the mentors who influenced his life.
